Rooted in Nature, Growing in Petworth: The Silver Hollow Jewellery Story

ree

In the heart of West Sussex, where the rolling South Downs meet historic market towns,

Petworth Pop Up has become part of our journey. It’s all been about transformation,

sustainability, and the joy of crafting pieces for the community. This is the story of Silver

Hollow Jewellery, and how our creations found their perfect home at Petworth Pop Up.

- The Maker Behind the Metal

If we haven’t crossed paths yet, allow me to introduce myself. I’m Dan, and I wear every

hat at Silver Hollow Jewellery—from designer to craftsman, from social media manager

to the person queueing at the post office with parcels bound for customers across the

country.

Running this business means I’m intimately involved with every stage of your jewellery’s

journey. Each piece passes through my hands multiple times: from initial design

sketches to the careful hammering and shaping at my workbench, right through to

wrapping it in our eco-friendly packaging. I genuinely love every single aspect of what I

do.

Whether I’m at our weekly market stalls in Chichester and Horsham, crafting a bespoke

commission in my studio, engaging with our community on social media, or even

making those post office runs, there’s something deeply satisfying about being

connected to the entire process. The creative freedom this work provides is something I

treasure—a gift that traces back to my Dad, who spent countless hours teaching me to

draw when I was younger and instilled in me an appreciation for making things by hand.

- From Lockdown Shed to Petworth Stockist

It started in lockdown 2020, with a video I stumbled across online—someone

transforming an old coin into a ring. The idea lodged itself in my mind and wouldn’t let

go. There was something compelling about taking an object with history and giving it

new life, new purpose. Within days, I had ordered a ring mandrel and a Half Crown coin,

and spent a sweltering afternoon in my shed, hammering and shaping until, several

hours later, I held something that almost resembled a ring.

That first piece was far from perfect, but it sparked something. I continued

experimenting with historic coins, gradually accumulating tools that filled every corner of

that garden shed. The space became a treasure trove of unusual equipment, including

the six-ton press that still sits in my workshop today, faithfully helping me create coin

rings and other signature pieces.

As my skills developed, so did my product range. Coin pendants and earrings joined the

collection, and then came spoon rings—jewellery crafted from reclaimed vintage cutlery

with its own fascinating history.

- The Philosophy: Nature-Inspired, Sustainably Crafted

Today, Silver Hollow Jewellery stands for more than just handmade accessories. Every

piece we create is rooted in two core principles: drawing inspiration from the natural

world and honouring environmental sustainability. Our collections, like the recent Terraform range, capture the raw textures of geological

formations—the rough surfaces of ancient stone, the organic patterns found in tree

bark, the way water shapes rock over centuries. We transform these natural textures

into wearable art, each piece balancing rugged, earth-inspired detail with smooth,

polished surfaces. Our sandcast sapphire pieces that we make are also another

example of the nature inspired jewellery we create. Raw, natural processes and finishes

has become a signature within many of the products we design.

Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword for us; it’s woven into every aspect of our work. All

our sterling silver pieces are crafted from 100% recycled silver. The spoon rings and

cutlery bangles that started this journe made from reclaimed vintage silverware that

would otherwise sit forgotten in dusty cupboards. Even our packaging is eco-conscious,

because we believe beautiful jewellery shouldn’t come at the earth’s expense.

Finding a Home at Petworth Pop Up

With our base of operations being in Chichester, finding stores near by to work with was

quite a challenge. When we first connected with Petworth Pop Up, we knew we’d found

kindred spirits. This was our first ever shop to stock in, and what an amazing one it is.

Petworth Pop Up is more than just a shop; it’s a celebration of independent British

makers and creators. Set on the High Street of this beautiful historic market town, just a

stone’s throw from the stunning Petworth House and Gardens, the shop showcases the

best of UK craftsmanship across art, ceramics, fashion, skincare, and of course,

jewellery.

What makes our partnership with Petworth Pop Up so natural is the shared values. Like

us, they champion sustainable, locally-made products. Like us, they believe in the story

behind each piece. And like us, they understand that when you buy from independent

makers, you’re not just purchasing an item—you’re supporting a dream, a craft honed

over countless hours, and a more sustainable way of doing business.

- Spoon Rings and Cutlery Bangles: History You Can WearAt Petworth Pop Up, you’ll find our spoon rings and cutlery bangles—pieces that

perfectly embody our philosophy of transformation and sustainability. These aren’t just

accessories; they’re pieces of history reimagined for modern life.

The tradition of spoon rings dates back to 17 th -century England, born from an unlikely

romance in grand estate houses. Servants who fell in love but couldn’t afford traditional

wedding rings would transform their master’s silverware into tokens of commitment.

Each ring carried not just the weight of precious metal, but the weight of a promise, a

risk taken, a love declared.

Today, our spoon rings carry forward that legacy of resourcefulness and meaning. Each

piece begins as vintage or antique cutlery, most of which are silver plated. Through

careful craftsmanship, we reshape these forgotten spoons and forks into unique rings

and bangles, preserving the original decorative patterns and hallmarks where possible.

The beauty of these pieces lies in their individuality. No two are exactly alike because

each starts from a different vintage spoon with its own decorative pattern, weight, and

character. When you wear a Silver Hollow Jewellery spoon ring, you’re wearing

something truly one-of-a-kind—a piece that carries decades or even centuries of history

while fitting perfectly into contemporary style.

Our cutlery bangles follow the same philosophy. Crafted from reclaimed vintage cutlery,

each bangle showcases the elegant curves and decorative elements of the original

piece. They’re statement pieces that spark conversation, especially when people learn

about the sustainable story behind them. You can find a wide range of styles and sizes

in store today.
